Cody Israel is a queer, Black, Queens-born Caribbean multidisciplinary artist. Their current work operates within three channels: policing, resistance, and agency of Blacks in the West, ancestor worship & portraiture, and rituals around memory and collective experience. They utilize the concept of the “Black Atlantic”, which examines the cultural hybridity of transatlantic Blackness, while emphasizing Haitian Vodun spirituality as a conduit to bridge together time, space, and experience through wood and the human body. The themes and interests that have helped them explore these concepts are modern application of African & American myth and religion, nautical transport as a cultural portal, and nature’s interaction with Black experience.
Their current studio is Hex House, a DIY, collective studio located in East Williamsburg, NY.
